Devil’s Gulch to Stairstep Falls

Walking towards the falls on Bill’s Trail.

This trail is an easy and pleasant walk to a disappointingly small waterfall.

Location: Samuel P. Taylor State Park
Length: 2.3 miles
Difficulty: easy
Shade: shaded
Parking: small parking area off Sir Francis Drake Blvd. across from the trailhead (free, but fills up quickly)
Public Transportation: none
WC: toilet at the picnic area, which is not quite on this trail route but not a huge detour from the bridge

Hiked: Mar 2022

The falls, even in March, were disappointingly dry (excuse the bad photo).

Trail Route & Notes

Start at Devil’s Gulch and take the small trail to the right, which follows the course of the stream. There’s only one bridge so you can’t miss it. Cross the stream and turn to the left to begin a gentle climb on Bill’s Trail. At the fork, go left towards the falls. Return via the same route.

Though I tried to time this hike to follow the rains, I still didn’t see much water in the falls. So if a waterfall is what you’re looking for, I’d recommend a different hike. But the trail through redwoods was pleasant and seems popular.

There’s lots of poison oak along the trails in this area, so be on the lookout.
